The columns and the remnants of this beautiful mosaic floor are all that is left of Santa Maria del Buonconsiglio – a 9th century Byzantine church not far from Castello Svevo. And I am in love with each remaining piece as stand over it, admiring it in the rain. To say that I am in love means that it has captured my imagination. I try to imagine who would have knelt here and inlaid all the pieces. I think of the mind that would have dreamt up of its design. I admire the craftsmanship and how it now looks even more lovely in the rain; the wetness bringing out all its latent colours. It’s hard for me to understand why it would have been purposely destroyed.
I’ve recently started making short videos of the places I write about and that inspire me and I’ve been posting them to instagram. Filming has opened up a whole new way of storytelling for me and I am excited to share it with you. Have a look… 🙂
